Customs and medication
June 15, 2007 10:35PM
I am going away next week for a family holiday on the costa brava,we are going for two weeks and Jordan will need 4 treatments while i am there.
I have got a letter from clinovia the pharmacutical company who provide the drugs and one from the hospital explaining about Jordan and why he needs it.
I have been told that i should carry his drugs in a clear plastic bag inside a cool bag in my hand luggage . I am getting a little nervous especially as all security has been tightened at the airport especially with liquids . Has anybody else had to take there medication and if so am i doing it the right way.
Thanks Lesley ,Jordans mum.

This is from one of the major London airport website frequently asked questions,

What quantities of liquid medication can I take with me?
Passengers are allowed to take essential medicines sufficient for the trip. Amounts under 100mls should be placed in a transparent plastic bag, with other liquids. If the container is larger than 100mls this should be presented at security for x-ray inspection. There is no limit on the amount, however you may be asked to verify the liquid by tasting, or provide verification for the product, such as a doctors letter.

I am concerned about the temperature of my medicine in the hold.
The hold areas of an aircraft have different temperatures and customers should speak to their airline to ensure the medication could be stored correctly. The airline may wish to have medicines verified by an airport pharmacist

If your still not sure give the airport a ring have a happy holiday.

Hi Lesley,

I have been on holiday twice since the new restrictions come into play and one of those times was only about a month after the the UK air threat.

I don't carry the immunoglobulins but i am diabetic and have carried copious amounts of insulin, Hypo gel, and needles galore. I have also worked within the travel industry for a major tour operator. My advice is and was carry the medication you need carry a letter from every doctor possible. (I had one from my GP and my Diabetologist) Leave all pharmacy labels on your medication, where possible only take brand new unopened medications also have a copy of your repeat perscription with you. I know with immunoglobulins there is no recognisable perscription but anything you got that proves it is what it is, is all you need. Something like a delivery reciept as long as it is named on it.

I also recommend trying to split the medication up just so as if the worst happens and you loose some medication hopefully you will still have enough left on another bag to last a frew days while you contact your travel insurance or the local pharmacy/doctor.

Like I mentioned earlier I have passed through Manchester Aiport twice like this and had no problems. I was asked question but when i explained and allowed them to do their checks it all worked out just fine.

I hope that puts ur mind a little more at rest.
